A clan tag is a shortened designation of a clan, team, or organization that is displayed next to a player's nickname. It is usually two to five letters or characters, often in square brackets, for example [ABC]. The tag works like a patch on a uniform: one glance at the nickname shows whom the person plays for.
How clan tags are used
In online games, a clan tag appears in the player list, in the scoreboard, in chat, in the kill feed, and in other places where the nickname is visible. It serves several purposes at once.
- Recognizability. Viewers and opponents quickly understand which group a player belongs to, and don't confuse namesakes and similar nicknames.
- Team identity. The roster looks unified: five people with the same tag are perceived as a team, not as a random set of players.
- Organization advertising. For esports organizations and sponsors, a tag in the nickname is free but constant presence in the broadcast frame and in match recordings.
- Community. Amateur clubs and groups of friends use tags to gather together in the player list and to recognize their own in public matches.
A typical situation
Five friends decide to play regularly and come up with a shared name. Each adds the same letters to the beginning or end of their nickname. In a public game, opponents immediately see that they are facing a coordinated five rather than five random people, and behave accordingly. If one of the players leaves the team, they remove the tag from their nickname, and another person with the same tag takes their place.
In the professional scene everything works the same way, except that the tag belongs to the organization rather than to a group of friends. A player who moves to another team changes the tag as well, so a change of label in a nickname is sometimes the first sign of a transfer.
What to know
A clan tag is not part of the nickname itself: it is a separate label that can be changed independently of the name. The order and styling depend on the game and on community habits: some put the tag before the nickname, some after, some choose brackets, some do without them.
Tags also have a downside. Someone else's label can be copied, so having a familiar tag does not prove that a player is really on that team. In addition, in many games tags are subject to rules about allowed words: offensive or misleading labels can lead to punishment.
The word comes from the English "clan tag": clan means "clan," tag means "label, tab." In Russian-speaking communities it is written as one word, declined in different ways, and sometimes shortened to just "tag."
For tournament organizers, a clan tag is also convenient: a uniform label helps to quickly check declared rosters and tell participants apart from outsiders in a lobby or on a server.
