What is Patch

A patch is an official game update that changes balance, fixes bugs, or adds new content.

Also written as: patches, patched, patch notes, patchnotes, update, hotfix

A patch is an update file that a developer releases for a game: it changes balance numbers, fixes bugs, adds heroes, weapons, or maps, and sometimes rewrites mechanics entirely. The word comes from the English "patch" — originally used to describe small files that literally "patched" vulnerabilities or errors in program code.

Why patches are needed

Any competitive game accumulates imbalance over time: some characters, weapons, or strategies become too strong, while others become useless. Developers track match statistics and player feedback, then release a patch that buffs weak elements and nerfs dominant ones. Besides balance, patches also fix technical issues — cheat-enabling bugs, game crashes, netcode problems.

Patches come in different scales:

  • Small (hotfixes) — quick fixes that address a critical bug or an obvious imbalance without changing the game's overall structure.
  • Medium — regular balance updates that slightly tweak damage numbers, costs, or stats.
  • Large (major) — change the game substantially: new mechanics, maps, characters, overhauls of entire systems.

How a patch affects esports

Every significant update can turn the current meta upside down — that is, the set of the most effective strategies and characters at a given time. What worked a week ago may become useless after a patch, and conversely, forgotten tactics can suddenly become strong. That's why professional teams carefully read patch notes (the list of changes) right after release and adjust their training to the new conditions.

Major tournaments sometimes lock the game version for the entire duration of the competition, so that a patch doesn't drop in the middle of the bracket and disrupt teams' preparation. This approach is called a "patch lock" — freezing the version for the tournament period.

For regular players, a patch is primarily a reason to re-examine the strengths of their build or role: what seemed like the optimal choice yesterday may need to be reconsidered after the update.
