What is Eco Round

Eco round is a round in CS2 in which a team deliberately forgoes buying full equipment in order to save up money for future rounds.

Also written as: eco-round, eco, ecorun, econ round, playing eco

An eco round is a tactical move in which a team consciously sacrifices its chance of winning the current round for the sake of money in the future. The economy in CS2 is designed so that players earn less money for lost rounds and kills than for a win with a full set of equipment. If a team spent everything on weapons and lost, in the next round it can only afford pistols and a couple of grenades — so the players go into an eco to save up for a proper buy over one or two rounds.

What it looks like in-game

During an eco round, a team usually buys cheap weapons or nothing at all except armor, and plays defensively, trying not to lose more money than necessary. Often players simply hang back away from the main fighting spots to avoid risking their inventory and to avoid provoking the opponent into wasting utility (grenades, flashbangs, smokes — consumable items used for tactics) for nothing.

The decision to go for an eco round is usually made by the IGL (the team captain responsible for overall strategy), based on how much money the team and the opponent have, and how many rounds are left until the end of the half.

Contrast with force-buy and full buy

An eco round is the extreme end of a range of economic decisions. Besides it, there are:

  • Full buy — purchasing a full set of equipment and weapons;
  • Force-buy — buying beyond what the team can really afford, often with its last money, in a situation where saving no longer makes sense;
  • Half-buy (semi-eco) — an intermediate option, where cheap weapons are bought, but not a full set.

The ability to read the opponent's economy is an important part of high-level play. Viewers and commentators often predict the opponent's eco round based on the score of previous rounds and discuss it during broadcasts, while experienced players factor in a possible eco rush — a fast, aggressive attack by a team with cheap weapons that relies on surprise instead of firepower.
