Inactive is a status a club assigns to a player who takes a break from competitive play without leaving the team for good. Formally, their spot on the roster (team lineup) is retained, but they don't take part in tournaments or scrims (practice matches). The return date may not be specified at all — this is what distinguishes inactive status from an ordinary vacation or sick leave.
The reasons for going inactive vary: fatigue from the competitive schedule, personal circumstances, a desire to rethink one's career, or a temporary shift to something else. Clubs usually frame this as a pause rather than a departure, in order to retain their rights to the player and not lose them for good in case they decide to return.
Why It Matters for the Team
Inactive status is not a mere technicality but a real problem for the organization. If a rank-and-file player goes inactive, finding a replacement is easier. But if it's a player who served as IGL (in-game leader, the person making decisions in the draft and during the match), the team loses not just a set of mechanical skills, but the person who kept everyone else in sync.
In such cases, the club has to:
- look for a temporary replacement — through an internal roster rotation or by bringing in an outside player;
- rebuild the strategy and drafting style, which were often built around that specific person;
- meet tournament deadlines, even though the inactive status itself is formally open-ended.
Inactive vs. Disband
Inactive status should be distinguished from a roster disband — the complete dissolution of a lineup. A disband is a final decision, after which the players become free agents. Inactive status, on the other hand, leaves the door open: the player may return to the team in a month, in a year, or may never return at all, in which case the club has to make a harsher decision about an official parting of ways.
The term comes from general esports roster management practice and is used across all disciplines — from Dota 2 and CS2 to other competitive games where teams publicly announce roster changes.
