Shard (in full — Aghanim's Shard, "Aghanim's fragment") is a purchasable item in Dota 2. It is consumed immediately upon use and permanently changes the hero: it adds a new active ability or upgrades one of the existing ones. In game slang it is simply called "shard," and phrases like "shard on Invoker" or "get the shard" mean that a player bought this item and used it on their hero.
How the shard works
Every hero has their own shard: the developers write an individual effect for each one. Sometimes it is a completely new action, sometimes it is an upgrade to a familiar ability: more damage, shorter cooldown, an additional effect. That is why the decision "buy the shard or not" always depends on the specific hero, their role, and the situation on the map.
A shard cannot be passed to another player or sold for full price: once used, it is "built into" the hero rather than sitting in the inventory like a regular item. This sets it apart from ordinary artifacts and makes the purchase a deliberate one — it does not take up a slot, but it cannot be undone either.
Shard vs. Aghanim: what's the difference
Newcomers are often confused by the fact that there are two "Aghanim" items. Aghanim's Scepter (in slang simply "Agh") is an expensive item that also upgrades the hero's abilities, but it takes up an inventory slot and costs noticeably more. The shard is a more affordable option, which is why it is often bought before the scepter. Both items can work together on the same hero, and patch notes often mention them in the same line.
Why shards are constantly tweaked in patches
The shard is one of the most "alive" elements of balance. If an ability gained from a shard turns out to be too strong or, conversely, useless, the developers change it in the next update. An example from recent news: in patch 7.41f, a change affected Invoker — the periodic damage from Ghost Walk tied to the shard on Aghanim's now works only against heroes, not against all targets around. Such targeted changes seem minor, but they can shift the optimal build and the usual purchase timings.
How the word is used
- "Shard first" — the player intends to buy the shard first and the rest of the items afterward.
- "Doesn't play without the shard" — the hero is considered weak until they get this item.
- "Shard on timings" — the purchase needs to be made by a certain moment in the game to gain an advantage.
The word "shard" itself comes from English, where it means "fragment, piece." The community uses it as is, without translation.
