What is Counter-pick

Counter-pick is the selection of a hero, character, or strategy specifically against what the opponent has already chosen, in order to gain an advantage through a favorable matchup.

Also written as: counterpick, counter pick, counter-picking, counterpicking, to counter-pick, to counterpick, counter-picked, counterpicked, counter picks, counter-picks

A counter-pick is a technique that appears during the draft phase (selecting heroes before a match) in games where teams build their rosters in turns. If the opponent has already revealed their choice, you respond with a hero who has a clear advantage against them: one who survives their main abilities, strips them of their main strength, or simply wins in a direct matchup. The slang verb "to counter-pick" means exactly this action.

How it works

In MOBA games (team arena games such as Dota 2), heroes have different strengths and weaknesses. One hero is good at killing targets with a large health pool, another quickly disappears from combat, a third prevents the enemy from using abilities. If the opponent already has a hero whose power is built on a single mechanism, a counter-pick is a choice of hero who disables or weakens that mechanism.

A typical situation: the opponent has a hero in the lane who needs a lot of time and resources to come into their own. You pick a hero who pressures them from the first minutes and doesn't let them build up power in peace. Or the opponent has a hero who is dangerous only within a narrow window, and you take one who can close that window.

Advantages and risks

The main upside of a counter-pick is gaining an edge before the game even starts: the lane or the fight goes slightly more easily in your favor than under equal conditions. But the technique has a downside.

  • A counter-pick does not guarantee victory. It only gives you a cushion, and the game is still decided by positioning, timings, and team actions.
  • You can lose flexibility. If you pick a hero only for the matchup and play them poorly yourself, an advantage on paper turns into a weakness in practice.
  • The opponent can respond. If they still have picks left, they can counter-pick your counter-pick.

That is why pick order in a draft matters: the one who picks later sees more information, while the one who picks earlier has to either take a universal hero or take a risk.

Where the word comes from

The term comes from the English "counter-pick": counter means "opposition" or "response", and pick means "choice". In English-language communities it is written both hyphenated and as a single word, and it is also used as a verb ("to counter-pick").

Not only about heroes

The word is used more broadly than in the narrow sense of choosing a hero. In games where maps, sides, or strategies are chosen before a match, a counter-pick is any responsive choice made with the opponent's already known decision in mind. The essence is the same everywhere: you are not playing "in a vacuum" but selecting a response to a specific action by the opponent.
