What is In-fight

In-fight is close-quarters combat in a shooter, when players meet at short range and the outcome is decided by reaction speed, aim, and the ability to make a quick decision.

Also written as: infight, in fight, in-fights, infights

In-fight is a word from the vocabulary of shooter players. It is the name for a firefight at short range: when opponents end up right next to each other, in a tight passage, around a corner, or inside a small room. The phrase "won the in-fight" means a player came out on top in such an encounter, while "lost the in-fight" means they were beaten to the punch in close combat.

Where the word comes from

The term comes from English: in — "inside, up close" and fight — "battle, clash". In the Russian-speaking community the word took hold as a calque and is inflected like an ordinary noun: "in the in-fight", "strong in-fight", "weak in-fight". A player who performs well in close combat is said to have a strong in-fight.

How an in-fight differs from long-range combat

In a long-range duel, a lot is decided by the accuracy of individual shots, recoil control, and crosshair work at a distance. In an in-fight the picture is different:

  • reaction time is minimal, and the first accurate shot often decides the outcome;
  • fast crosshair placement and confident mouse control matter;
  • positioning is highly important: the angle and side from which a player meets the opponent determines who sees the enemy first;
  • there is a notable element of surprise, so psychology and reading the situation play no smaller a role than mechanics.

What it looks like in CS2

A typical situation: a team takes a site, one player waits in a tight spot, and an opponent comes at them from around a corner almost point-blank. Seconds decide everything: who notices the enemy first, who gets them in the crosshair faster, who doesn't freeze. Another example is a clash inside a room, where visibility is limited and the fight begins unexpectedly for both sides.

Small details matter in such moments too. Players rely not only on the picture but also on sound: footsteps, reloading, weapon switching. That is why, in close combat, attention to sound becomes part of the in-fight, and the ability to act quietly, for example not giving yourself away with unnecessary noise, provides a real advantage.

What counts as a good in-fight

A strong in-fight is made up of several qualities: fast reaction, clean aim, a cool head, and an understanding of how to set up the encounter with an opponent so that they end up at a disadvantage. Players who are singled out for their close combat often take on roles where clashes are unavoidable, and know not to trade away their position for unnecessary risks.

The word is also used more broadly in casual speech: "in an in-fight" can be said about any moment when the fighting is going on at close range, even if it is not a specific duel between two players but a mass skirmish of several people in a small space. In that case teamwork and the ability to quickly support a teammate come to the fore.

In conversations about training, the term often appears alongside other concepts: aim, spray control, and positioning, because it is their combination that makes close combat reliably winnable.
