What is Spray Control

Spray control is the skill of managing a weapon's recoil during automatic fire, allowing the player to keep the crosshair on target while shooting a burst.

Also written as: spraycontrol, spray-control, recoil control, spray pattern control, weapon spray control

Spray control is a technique for managing the crosshair during automatic fire, where the player compensates for recoil movement with the mouse so that bullets keep hitting the target instead of flying up and to the sides.

How it works

Every weapon in the game has a predetermined recoil pattern — a fixed trajectory along which the point of impact shifts during continuous fire. The first bullets land almost exactly where the crosshair is aimed, but then the barrel "kicks" upward and drifts to the side following a specific pattern. To keep a burst on target, the player moves the mouse in the direction opposite to the recoil — usually downward and slightly to the side — retracing the pattern's shape in reverse.

Patterns differ between weapons: some guns climb almost straight up, others climb while drifting left or right, and still others have more complex trajectories with several curves. Knowing the specific pattern of a specific weapon, combined with trained muscle memory, is the foundation of good recoil control.

Where it's used

Spray control matters most at medium and long range, where a burst is more effective than single shots or short bursts. At close range, other shooting techniques are more common, but in firefights across half the map, the ability to hold a burst on target directly affects the number of frags.

There's also a specific technique called "pre-aim spray," where a player starts firing a burst in advance at a point where they expect an opponent to appear, relying on pattern memory without visually aiming during the first fractions of a second.

Where the term comes from

The word comes from the English "spray" — to scatter — since uncontrolled automatic fire visually resembles bullets being sprayed across an area. This is also where the name of the whole mechanic comes from — spray control, meaning control over this "spraying." In the Russian-speaking community, the calque "спрей контроль" became established, and the recoil itself is often simply called "spray."

Recoil patterns can change with weapon balance updates, so after patches players often re-practice familiar trajectories on training maps to make sure their muscle memory matches the weapon's current behavior.
