What is Insta-smoke

Insta-smoke is a smoke grenade thrown at the very start of a round, while freeze time is still running, so that the smoke blocks off a key passage before the opponent can see anything.

Also written as: insta smoke, instasmoke, insta-smokes, instant smoke, instant smokes, insta smokes, insta-smoking

Insta-smoke is a CS2 technique in which a smoke grenade lands on the desired spot almost instantly after the round begins. The word "insta" comes from "instant": the smoke appears immediately, rather than several seconds after the action starts.

How it works

At the start of every round there is freeze time — a short period of immobilization when players buy equipment and set up, but cannot move yet. In regular play, smokes are thrown during the round, after players have reached their positions. An insta-smoke is different: the player prepares the throw in advance and executes it at the very first moment the round has started. The smoke grenade first flies through the air, then bursts open and covers the passage with a dense cloud. As a result, by the time the opponent could take an advantageous position or simply peek out, the view at the target spot is already blocked.

Why it is needed

The main goal is to cut off the opponent's line of sight on a key area of the map before they have time to see anything or take a position. This helps to safely move out toward the chosen direction, conceal the start of an attack, or deprive defenders of the chance to quickly peek forward and gather information.

An insta-smoke is almost always thrown using a memorized lineup — a practiced set of aiming points and throw parameters that is repeated round after round. A lineup makes the throw reproducible: the player knows where to aim and how to throw, and gets the same result every time. That is why insta-smokes on maps are usually learned in advance, in practice, rather than improvised during a match.

Example from a game

A team is attacking, and the plan requires quickly taking the passage to one of the sites. One of the players throws a smoke from a lineup in the first moment of the round, and the smoke blocks the line of sight along which defenders usually watch that passage. The other players move under cover of the cloud and reach their position without coming under early fire or scouting.

How it differs from a regular smoke

A regular smoke is a universal utility grenade that can be thrown at any moment of the round: to block vision, split the map, cover a bomb plant, or cover a retreat. An insta-smoke is a special case in terms of timing: it is done immediately, at the beginning, and works as a pre-planned part of a tactic. Its value lies in speed and predictability: the opponent has no time to react because the smoke is already in place.

The technique itself falls under utility — grenades and other items that are used not for damage, but for controlling the map and vision. Insta-smokes are part of the basic set of lineups in any team tactic where it is important to quickly and safely take over space.
