VAC stands for Valve Anti-Cheat, the anti-cheat system made by Valve. It checks players on protected servers and looks for programs that give an unfair advantage, such as automatic aim or showing enemies through walls. If the system detects such a program, the account receives a VAC ban. In games and on forums people refer to it briefly: "got VAC'd," "caught a VAC," "got VAC banned."
How it works
The main feature of a VAC ban is that it is tied to the Steam account, not to a single game or a single match. The player loses the ability to join VAC-secured servers in the game where they were caught. A ban mark appears next to the profile, and other users can see it. For many this is a stigma: when choosing teammates, buying accounts, or joining a team, this mark is the first thing people check.
The ban is not issued instantly. The anti-cheat detects the violation, and the ban may arrive after some time: sometimes a few days later, sometimes later still. Valve does this deliberately, so that cheat developers cannot quickly work out which method of evasion was detected and adapt a new version of their program to it.
How a VAC ban differs from other bans
Not every ban in a game is a VAC ban. There are other kinds of restrictions:
- bans for behavior: insults, sabotage, not showing up for a match. This is a penalty on access to competitive mode, but not a VAC ban;
- bans on third-party platforms such as FACEIT. These are issued by the platform's own anti-cheat and apply only there;
- bans for violations in the Steam community, for example for trade scams. This is a separate category.
The main difference of a VAC ban is that it concerns cheating specifically and is issued by Valve itself. A player can create a new account, but the old ban does not disappear from the original one.
Can a VAC ban be removed
No. Valve on principle does not reverse such bans and does not accept appeals for removal: the decision is considered final. That is why players take this term very seriously. If an account with a VAC ban is being sold or discussed in the community, it is always considered a serious drawback.
Where the term appears
The term most often comes up in discussions about fair play, in complaints about cheaters, and when checking player profiles. Viewers and commentators use it when the conversation turns to rule violations and the penalties for them. For a newcomer, it is worth remembering one simple thing: a VAC ban is issued for cheats, is tied to the Steam account, and cannot be reversed.
