What is Variance

Variance is the spread of results around an expected value: random deviations in a game that mean the same skill or the same decision does not always produce the same outcome.

Also written as: variances, RNG, randomness, spread, bullet spread, damage spread, dispersion, deviation

In esports, the word "variance" is used in two senses: a gameplay sense and a statistical one. Both describe the same phenomenon: the result doesn't always equal what "should" have happened according to the calculation.

Variance as statistics

In mathematics, variance shows how far results deviate from the average. If a player averages two kills per round, but gets nothing in some rounds and pulls off four kills in others, they have high variance. If the number of kills is almost always the same, variance is low.

Analysts and commentators use the word when they need to explain that a short series of matches proves nothing yet. A player may have "peaked" or "collapsed" simply because of random circumstances, not because they suddenly got much better or worse. The smaller the sample (the number of maps or rounds played), the more variance affects the outcome. Over the long run, results generally converge toward the real level.

Variance as a game mechanic

In shooters, "spread" or "variance" often refers to the random deviation of bullets from the point of aim. Even with a perfectly placed crosshair, some shots go off to the side: for example, while running, spraying, or with certain types of weapons. The player cannot fully control this spread, so the same duel setup sometimes ends differently.

Similar elements appear in other genres too: random damage within a set range, critical hit chance, item drops. All of this adds unpredictability to a match, which players call variance.

How the word sounds in conversation

It is usually used to explain bad luck or good luck:

  • "We lost to variance" — the result was down to chance, not weak play.
  • "It's just variance" — there's no need to draw conclusions from a few unlucky matches.
  • "High variance" — a playstyle or strategy that produces sharp swings in results.

The last usage is tied to the choice of risk. An aggressive tactic with a chance of a spectacular win and a high chance of a quick loss has greater variance than cautious play, where results are more stable but rarely as spectacular.

Where the word comes from

The term comes from mathematical statistics and became common in gaming communities, where counting percentages, averages, and probabilities has long been standard practice. In the Russian-speaking community, the more colloquial "random" and "spread" live alongside it.

Variance cannot be eliminated: it is built into the game. But it can be taken into account when evaluating players and teams. A single map, a single tournament day, or a short run of wins and losses reflects a participant's strength worse than a large body of matches. That is exactly why experienced viewers and analysts are cautious about sharp conclusions after a single result and prefer to look at trends over a long period.
