What is Drop

Drop is an item or reward that a player receives at random: for a match, for time spent in the game, or on a schedule. The word comes from the English "drop," meaning "to fall" or "to let fall."

Also written as: drops, dropped, dropping, dropped item, item drop, drop rate, twitch drops, drops enabled, дроп, дропы

Drop (from the English "drop," meaning "to fall") is what the game "lets fall" to the player: an item, currency, cosmetics, or another reward. The key idea is that the player does not buy the item directly but receives it according to the rules of the game, most often with an element of chance.

Where drops appear

The word is used in several senses, and the context usually makes the meaning clear.

  • Reward for activity. A player completed a match, leveled up an account, or finished a task, and received an item. A classic example: after a game, a random item arrives as a reward, most often a cosmetic one.
  • Falling from a killed opponent or a container. In games with loot (that is, spoils collected during a match), items drop from defeated opponents and crates.
  • Drop for watching. Some tournaments and streamers run promotions in which a viewer is awarded an in-game reward for watching a broadcast. This usually requires linking a game account to the streaming platform.
  • Drop as an action. In team shooters, to "drop" means to throw down a weapon so that a teammate can pick it up. For example, a player with enough money gives a teammate a rifle so that they can be armed for the round.

Drops and probability

The main feature of a drop is randomness. Each possible reward has its own chance of dropping, and rare items drop considerably less often than common ones. This is why a separate culture has grown up around drops: players compare who got what, enjoy rare finds, and discuss "lucky" and "unlucky" days.

If items can be passed to other players or sold on a marketplace, a drop becomes part of the in-game economy. A rare and sought-after item can cost noticeably more than an ordinary one, which means that a random reward turns into a valuable asset. That is why parents and players themselves should remember: an item's value is determined by the market and can change, and items should be traded and sold only through official platforms so as not to fall victim to scammers.

Drops and purchases

A drop is often contrasted with a purchase. An item can be bought for money or in-game currency, or it can be received as a reward. Developers usually limit drops: for example, they set a cap on rewards per period or conditions for receiving them. This way they maintain the value of items and motivate players to return to the game regularly.

How not to get confused

If you come across the word "drop," look at what is being discussed:

1. a random reward issued by the game;

2. an item that fell from an opponent or a container;

3. a reward for watching a broadcast;

4. handing over a weapon or item to another player.

In all cases the general meaning is the same: something "falls" to the player rather than being acquired by them directly. The word itself has long been part of Russian-language gaming slang: it has given rise to the verbs "dropnut'" and "dropnulsya," which players use both in the sense of "to throw away" and in the sense of "to receive a reward."
