Freeze time is the opening phase of every round in CS2. Players on both teams are already at their starting positions but cannot move: the characters are effectively "frozen". At the same time, they can open the buy menu, purchase weapons, grenades and equipment, check the team's economy and discuss how to play the round. When the freeze time timer runs out, the round truly begins and everyone is able to move.
Why freeze time exists
The main purpose of this period is to let teams prepare calmly. Without it, a round would turn into chaos: some players would still be buying while others were already running forward. Freeze time levels the start and makes it fair for both sides.
What usually happens during this time:
- players buy weapons and utility (grenades and other support items);
- the captain or in-game leader (IGL) calls the plan for the round: where to go, who throws what, how to play if the economy is weak;
- the team agrees on timings and assigns roles;
- players check the score, the money and the weapons their teammates have left.
How the term is used
In the speech of players and casters, the term appears in a wide range of contexts. People say "I managed to top up my buy during freeze time", "we discussed the plan back in freeze", "the buy is done, freeze time is almost over". The shortened form "freeze" is also common. Sometimes people simply say "the freeze" or "the freeze period", but in the esports community "freeze time" is the term that has stuck.
Freeze time is mentioned when talking about buying: if a team needs to decide whether to buy expensive weapons or play an eco round, that decision is made at exactly this moment. Coaches in practice sessions go over how to use this time efficiently: for example, not wasting it on arguments, but preparing standard options for different situations in advance.
A typical example
A team lost the previous round and enters the new one with a reduced budget. During freeze time, the players quickly look at everyone's money and decide who buys fully and who tops up what they are missing with help from teammates. The leader says briefly: "We play default, take mid, smoke on the second timer." By the time the freeze ends, everyone has the right weapon in hand and the plan is clear to each player.
Related concepts
Closely tied to freeze time are the insta-smoke (a smoke thrown right at the start of the round, while the freeze is still on or has just ended), grenade lineups and the buy. Everything done before the player's first step belongs to preparation during freeze time. Knowing how to make the best use of this time is one of the basic habits that separates an organized team from a chaotic one.
