What is Top Roster

Top roster is a team of the strongest players that ranks among the best in its discipline and regularly competes for top places at major tournaments. The expression is used both for the team itself and for its playing lineup during a specific period.

"Top roster" is a colloquial expression from the esports community. It refers to a team that belongs to the elite of its discipline: it consistently qualifies for the biggest tournaments, plays against the strongest opponents, and sits near the top of the rankings. The term has no clear official definition, so everyone draws the boundaries in their own way.

What lies behind the term

The word "roster" is the key one here. In esports, a team is not only an organization with a name and a logo, but also the specific people who are currently playing under its banner. The organization may stay the same while the players change completely. That is why teams are discussed specifically as rosters: "the old roster," "the new roster," "the top roster."

The prefix "top" indicates the level. It is usually applied to teams of the highest echelon, often called tier 1 — the designation for the highest class of tournaments and teams, where the world's or a region's strongest squads play.

How the term is used

Most often it appears in three contexts:

  • About achievements. "He played on top rosters" means the player competed for teams at the very highest level.
  • About transfers. "The player made it onto a top roster" or "was dropped from a top roster" means that the person joined a strong team or lost their place on it.
  • About competition. There are few spots on such teams and many contenders, so talk about getting onto a top roster almost always sounds like talk about a career milestone.

The expression also appears in career retrospectives. A typical storyline: a player joins a strong team and delivers results, then loses form or their place, and afterwards moves to a less prestigious squad. Only a few manage to return from there to their former level. This is exactly why a long career with several returns to the elite is regarded as a rarity.

How a top roster differs from an ordinary team

The criteria are loose, but the ones most often named are these:

  • regular participation in major tournaments, rather than one-off breakthroughs from qualifiers;
  • professional infrastructure: a coaching staff, analysts, and regular training camps;
  • high positions in the discipline's rankings;
  • players having salaries and contracts, not just prize money.

It is important to remember, however, that "top" is a fluid concept. A team can be among the best for a season and then lose its position after an unsuccessful roster change. That is why the phrase "top roster" is always tied to a time period: people say "the top roster of those years," not simply "a top roster forever."

Where the term comes from

The expression grew out of Russian-language esports speech and the English word "top" — "upper, best." Closely related terms are "top team," "top club," and "tier-1 team." English-language texts use "top roster" and "top-tier team." The term is not tied to any one game and is used in the same way in Counter-Strike, Dota 2, and other disciplines.
