What is Flashbang

Flashbang is a blinding grenade in CS2 that briefly deprives an opponent of sight and hearing if they're looking toward the explosion.

Also written as: flashbangs, flash, flashbang grenade, pop flash, flashed, teamflash

Flashbang is a flash grenade in CS2. On detonation, it produces a bright flash that blinds players looking toward it, along with a loud bang that temporarily mutes hearing. The longer a player was looking directly at the flash, the stronger and longer the blindness effect — up to a full white screen for several seconds.

The word comes straight from English: flashbang, a designation for real-world non-lethal weapons used by special forces to disorient opponents. In esports slang the term stuck as is, and in Russian-speaking communities it got shortened and Russified into "фleshка" — though the term has nothing to do with a USB flash drive; the resemblance is purely phonetic.

How the flashbang is used in the game

The flashbang is one of the basic tactical elements in CS2, alongside the smoke grenade (which blocks line of sight). There are several typical scenarios:

  • Pop flash — the grenade is thrown so it detonates almost immediately after entering the opponent's field of view, giving them no chance to turn away;
  • Flash through smoke — a combination where the smoke blocks vision and the flashbang adds blindness for anyone shooting blindly through it;
  • Self-flash — a player intentionally blinds themselves to safely rush into an open area, knowing the grenade's timing;
  • Cover flash — thrown during a retreat to cover the team's back and buy time.

In professional play, precise pop flashes on site entries are prepared setups that teams drill during scrims (practice matches). One player throws the flashbang from behind cover so teammates see the angle of detonation and know to close their eyes or turn away in time, while opponents get fully blinded at the moment of the push.

Throwing a flashbang badly — that is, blinding yourself or teammates without result — is called "flashing yourself" or "teamflashing" in the community. It's one of the common mistakes at a beginner level of play that can cost a round, which is why grenade timing and throw angle are considered a separate skill, trained apart from general shooting.
